# Manage issued debit cards

> Find your Lemma debit cards, then change spending limits, rename, freeze, or cancel them.

Once a card is issued, you can find it on the [cards page](https://app.getlemma.com/_/cards) and change its settings at any time. This page covers how to find your cards, what each status means, and every change you can make to a card.

## Finding your cards

The [cards page](https://app.getlemma.com/_/cards) lists every card issued in your entity. The table groups cards by cardholder and shows each card's nickname, type (virtual, physical, or single-use), and status:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Active | The card approves purchases within its limits. |
| Frozen | The card declines new transactions until you unfreeze it. |
| Awaiting activation | A physical card that works online and is declined in stores until you activate it. |
| Used | A single-use card whose one purchase is pending or settled. |
| Expired | The card is past its expiration date and declines every transaction. |
| Canceled | The card is permanently stopped. |

To narrow the list, search by cardholder, card name, or the card's last 4 digits. You can also filter by **Status** and **Type**.

The cards page includes cards that can no longer be used, such as canceled and expired cards. The card widgets on your dashboard and on each bank account's page show only usable cards. A card is usable when it's active, frozen, or awaiting activation.

Select a card in the list to open its page. Every settings change below starts from there. A used, expired, or canceled card can't be changed.

## Changing spending limits

Click the `...` button at the top-right of the card's page and select **Update limits**. You can change either limit, switch one off, or add one you skipped. Lemma checks new transactions against the new limits as soon as you save.

If you switch both limits off, the card approves any purchase up to the cash available in its funding account.

On a single-use card, **Update limits** changes its **Maximum amount** instead. The card stays single-use. After the card is used, you can't change its maximum amount.

## Renaming a card

Click the `...` button at the top-right of the card's page, select **Rename card**, and enter a new nickname. The new name replaces the old one everywhere, including on past transactions.

## Freezing a card

Freeze a card to block new transactions instantly. Freezing keeps the card's spending limits and transaction history. When you unfreeze it, the card works exactly as it did before.

**1. Open the card menu**

Click the `...` button at the top-right of the card's page.

**2. Select Freeze card**

Confirm in the dialog that follows. The card is frozen immediately.

To unfreeze, follow the same steps and select **Unfreeze card**.

## Canceling a card

Cancel a card to stop it permanently, for example when an employee leaves or a physical card is lost. You can't undo a cancellation. To pause spending temporarily, freeze the card instead.

**1. Open the card menu**

Click the `...` button at the top-right of the card's page.

**2. Select Cancel card**

Confirm in the dialog that follows. The card is canceled immediately and
can no longer approve transactions.

Canceling also covers a physical card that is still in the mail. It can never be activated, even after it arrives. Delivery tracking and the **Activate card** button disappear from a canceled card's page.

## Who can manage cards

Only members with the Owner, CFO, or Accounting [banking role](https://getlemma.com/docs/guides/user-roles.md#banking-permissions) can issue or change cards. Read-only members can hold a card and see its activity, but can't change any card, including their own.

| Action | Read only | Accounting | CFO | Owner |
| - | :-: | :-: | :-: | :-: |
| Hold a card and see its activity | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Issue a new card | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Activate a delivered physical card | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Change spending limits | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Rename a card | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Freeze or unfreeze a card | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Cancel a card | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |

This means a read-only cardholder can't raise their own limit, unfreeze their own card, or activate a physical card that arrived in their own mail. If they lose their card, an Owner, CFO, or Accounting teammate needs to freeze it for them.
