A card can spend money only when three things are true at once: the bank account it is linked to holds enough cash, the purchase meets the card’s authorization controls, and the card is active. A purchase that fails any one of them is declined.

Cash in the bank account

Every card is created linked to one bank account and spends from that account’s balance. A card can never spend more than the account holds, whatever its own limits allow, so the account works as a limit shared by every card linked to it. For example, fund a bank account for employee cards with $10,000 and give each employee a card with a $5,000 limit: no employee can spend more than $5,000, and together they can never spend more than the $10,000 in the account.

Authorization controls

Every card carries authorization controls that are checked before each purchase is approved: spending limits over a single transaction, a day, a week, a month, or the card’s lifetime, and an optional list of merchant categories the card is limited to or barred from. Lemma also applies its own fraud controls to every card, underneath yours. They block high-risk merchants, such as gambling websites, and cap cash withdrawals at ATMs. You cannot remove them. Update card changes a card’s controls after it is issued. The next authorization is checked against the new controls, and the card keeps its number. An update is all or nothing: the status and controls in one request are applied as a single change, so if any part of the request is invalid, none of it is applied.

Is the card active?

A card is always in one of three states:

Active

active. The card can spend. Every card starts here.

Frozen

disabled. Every new authorization is declined, but the card keeps its number, controls, and history.

Canceled

canceled. Permanent. The card declines every authorization and can never be reactivated.
A card can move between active and frozen as often as you need, and unfreezing puts it back exactly as it was. Freeze and unfreeze a card by setting its status with Update card:
Canceling a card is permanent.
