External accounts (also known as external recipients) are saved bank accounts you can send payments to. Instead of entering routing and account numbers every time, save a recipient once and select them when you send externally.
Adding a new external recipient
Open the new recipient form
Enter the recipient's details
- Recipient legal name: as it appears on their bank account
- Recipient type: individual or business
- Nickname: optional label for your reference (e.g., “Lab supplier”), not visible to the recipient
- Routing number and Account number of a checking account
- Recipient address: the account holder’s US mailing address
- Email: optional, where we send tax-document requests
- Request tax documents: emails the recipient to complete a W-9. Requires an email.
Save the recipient
The recipient is now available when sending external payments.
Recipients cannot be edited after they are created. To change a recipient’s details, add a new recipient.
The address can be any length when you save the recipient, but wire
transfers cannot be sent when the address line 1, line 2, or city exceeds 35
characters.
Sending money to a saved recipient
Send payments to a saved recipient from Send externally. As a shortcut, opening a recipient from your external recipients list opens its page, where a Send money button jumps straight to the send page.
