Banking permissions

Banking permissions control access to Lemma’s financial features. They are hierarchical: Accounting includes Read Only, CFO includes Accounting, and Owner includes CFO.

Read Only

Read Only members can view balances and transactions, export statements and reports, categorize transactions, deposit checks, and charge payer virtual cards. They cannot move money, issue debit cards, manage users, or change entity settings.

Accounting

Accounting members can do everything in Read Only, plus move money, issue debit cards, create cash sweeps, manage external recipients, send invoices, create or rename transaction categories, and upload requested documents. Accounting members cannot open bank accounts, pull funds from a linked account by ACH, approve transfers, accept loans, manage users, or change owner-only entity settings.

CFO

CFO members can do everything in Accounting, plus accept Lemma Capital loans, approve transfer requests, set transfer approval rules, and order checkbooks. CFOs cannot open bank accounts, pull funds from a linked account by ACH, invite or remove members, change entity settings, or connect third-party apps. Like other non-owner roles, a CFO can be limited to specific bank accounts.

Owner

Owners have the full banking permission set. In addition to CFO capabilities, they can open bank accounts, pull funds from a linked account by ACH, invite and remove users, change entity settings, and connect third-party apps. Owners always see every bank account for the entity.

External accounts

Accounting and owners To manage saved external accounts for future transfers, open External accounts to see all saved recipients. Select New External Recipient to add another destination. The External accounts guide explains how saved recipients work.

Practice permissions

Practice permission is independent of banking permission. The Billing Team option provides access to:
  • Lockbox mail and note editing
  • Health data imported from your EHR
  • EOB and ERA approval workflows
  • Direct EOB uploads
Removing practice permission does not automatically remove banking permission, and changing banking permission does not automatically remove practice permission.

Edit member access

Depending on your entity’s configuration, selecting Edit access opens controls for:
  • Banking permission
  • Practice permission
  • The bank accounts visible to that member
When a member is an Owner, account selections are retained but do not limit the Owner: owners can always see every account. If the member later leaves the Owner role, the saved selection applies again. Changing banking permission to No access removes access to banking balances, transactions, payments, cards, and statements. It does not remove practice access. To remove all membership access, use Remove from entity instead.

Safe role changes

Lemma protects the last owner. You can lower your own role only when another owner already has access to the entity. This prevents you from locking the entity out of owner controls. After a self-downgrade, you lose the ability to change roles. You cannot promote yourself again, including from Read Only to Owner. Another owner must restore your role. A downgrade does not cancel the member’s card. Removing the member cancels their card. The licensed professional owner on file may be protected from role changes and removal. If an action is disabled, hover over it for the reason shown by Lemma.

Remove a member

Select the row actions menu, choose Remove from entity, and confirm. Removal cannot be undone, you would have to invite them again. Removing yourself affects the selected entity only. If you belong to other entities, those memberships remain available.
